100 Argumentative Essay Topics (That Are Actually Arguable)
Most argumentative topic lists are full of settled questions — the kind where one side is obviously right and the essay writes itself into a flat five-paragraph lecture. This list only includes topics where a smart, informed person could defensibly argue either side. That is the whole definition of an argumentative topic.
How to pick one that will actually work
Three tests. First, can you state the opposing position in a way its actual proponents would agree with? If you cannot steelman the other side, you do not understand the debate well enough to write on it yet. Second, is there evidence on both sides, or does one side only have vibes? An argument that pits data against feelings is not really an argument. Third, does the topic have a reasonable scope for your word count? "Is capitalism ethical" is not a 1,000-word essay; "should platform workers be classified as employees under the 2024 EU directive" is. The topics below are grouped by domain. Inside each group they are ordered roughly from most accessible to most technical. The starred ones are the topics I have seen produce the strongest student essays in the last two years — not because they are easy, but because the evidence base is rich and the debates are live.
